A friend asked me this question over brunch last week and all I could say was,

It depends on what you want to see. Beach? Mountains? Fields? hahaha. What do you want to do?

But I honestly don’t know what to say to such a vague question about a country with 7,107 islands. So I guess here’s my list of places that would be nice to visit, though I haven’t been to all of them and would love to go there. In no particular order from North to South:

  1. Batanes - They have FOUR seasons - yes, there’s winter in some areas of the Philippines. They are a UNESCO heritage site or should I say heritage group of islands. They’re culturally and ecologically rich. And it’s one of my dream destinations! photos (clockwise) via scubadivephilippinestravelmonologuewandering angel, and bong bajo
  2. Ilocos Region - UNESCO heritage houses from the Spanish colonial times are in Vigan. Their food is amazing. They have sand dunes, white sand beaches in Pagudpud, wind farm along the beach, and an ancient light house to go with the centuries old churches and ruins.
  3. Cordillera Mountains - Home of the Banaue Rice Terraces and the Hanging Coffins in Sagada. Waterfalls, caves, cool misty mornings, hikes on mountain peaks, limestone cliffs, and the smell of pine with indigenous/tribal food like the pinikpikang manok (hammered chicken) and their mountain coffee cannot be missed. They also have white water rafting.
  4. Baler, Aurora - One of the top surfing spots in the Philippines. It’s also the town where the Siege of Baler took place - Spanish soldiers sieged a fortified church during the Philippine Revolution and continued to do so for a year despite the loss of Spain in the war d/t lack of communication with their government and military. If you’re not into surfing they also have trekking at Calauan Falls.     photo via lokalsoul
  5. Zambales Province & Mount Pinatubo - Another beach destination with camping, surfing - for beginners - trekking at coves, and tree top climbing and zip lining. Adventure tourism is clearly on the rise. But, it’s one place where you can say “I’ve swam inside an active volcano’s crater.” BAM! Plus, the province is only 2 hours outside of Metro Manila.
  6. Bicol Region - It’s a region of sleepy towns where locals surf - yes, again - wake board, eat spicy food, have a volcano with a perfect cone as their backdrop, keep to themselves an amazing national park, camp at a pristine beach, let Survivor France film on one of the limestone islands, relax in hot springs, swim with whale sharks, and hosts one of the biggest festivals in the country - the Peñafrancia Festival. It’s a lovely region, just don’t go there during typhoon season. They get hit the most often in the country. Did I also mention it’s one of the cheapest regions to visit in the Philippines? :D

To be continued…

I dislike the feeling of being at home when I’m abroad.

George Bernard Shaw

I like to experience things I don’t get to when I’m at home, especially food! :)

Sometimes I feel robbed whenever I realize how often I don’t get to see a beautiful sky at sunset anymore.

Seeing photos of Jordan makes me want to really go to Jordan, particularly at this place. God willing that I will get married or be a common-law wife or long-term girlfriend or whatever, I want to go here with the man that will put honey in honeymoon. Amazing place! AMAZING!!!

Or I can just go here to reward myself for whatever reason I can think of…when I’m able to…

A friend was contemplating on “what ifs” if she stayed back home instead of trying out living in another country. It also made me think of “what if” I stayed back home in 2009. I would definitely be more stable in my career, finances, and life in general, but I would’ve missed out on a lot of travels, self-discoveries, experiences, and people. I also think that I would still have gone out of the country anyways to do my Master’s. No regrets despite my current instability. This too will pass. Je ne regrette rien.

Holiday Freebie…and Crowds: Dreams & Reality, Musée d’Orsay Paris.

First of all, I was not in Paris. This was the Musée d’Orsay Paris’ exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore. I’ve been wanting to see this exhibit since it had Van Gogh’s Starry Night, but I couldn’t get anyone to actually go with me.

Saturday after Chinese New Year’s, a friend messaged me asking if I had plans and if I wanted to go see Van Gogh. Of course I was like “Heck yeah” and after a couple of hours we met up - yup that fast. A sign at the entrance greeted us saying something like “As part of Chinese New Year Celebrations, all galleries are free to the public from January 23 to something something…I read about this freebie thing being only on January 23 and 24 only but turns out we were still going in for FREE and saving $$$!! Well, my friend only saved $$ because he got too excited with the freebie and rented an audio guide for each one of us.

The price of a freebie: crowds. You don’t really get to appreciate art that much when people start bothering you to take their photo for them or when they suddenly block your shot or the sign you’re reading, or worse, they step on you. But it was free. I can’t complain. I saved money and got to see marvelous works of art. The security guard though did approach me and kindly told me to be more careful with the umbrella dangling on my left arm because I could hit and hurt someone with it. It was that crowded…and she was exaggerating. You can’t hurt anyone with a folding umbrella dangling on your arm. Will it get in contact with another person? Probably. Will it hurt them? I doubt. Was I near anyone when she told me that? NO. I was at the last section standing & taking a photo of a wall while waiting for my friend to finish - we got separated after 5 minutes we entered LOL.

Anyhow, when I was looking at one of the paintings I suddenly realized that this is what I first thought what a painting is (brush stroke, texture, etc.) when I was a kid. Turned out to be Monet’s. The Starry Night painting I was expecting also turned out to be The Starry Night over the Rhone. Still a Starry Night. And I got my culture fix. I’m I was happy.

When we were leaving, the line went beyond the 30-minute marker in front of the gallery doors at the basement and reached the Museum’s lobby on the first floor. It’s nice to know plenty of people still appreciate art ^^ and it was even a greater thought that we only lined up for 20 minutes :D

In the almost two years I’ve been living in and out of Singapore, I have never ever tried this drink until the other day. My good friend bought it for me - her treat, yay! - and made me realize I’ve been missing out on a lot! It tastes like gulaman but without the sago/tapioca pearls! I never knew what a winter melon was  - and still don’t know - but damn! Glad I had it even if it’s in a can. Refreshingly sweet! :D
